Beauty of Line & Form
Since the time of Plato the concepts of Beauty and Truth have been wedded in Western thought. We intuitively know that there is a difference between a pleasing surface beauty and something more elemental: something that speaks to a more profound understanding of why certain forms, arrangements, and lines have a way of communicating with us. In the 20th century, artists like Henry Moore and Constantin Brancusi used abstraction as a way of reducing the human form to its elements, stripping their human subjects of all recognizable detail and simplifying anatomy so the view could appreciate the mood, feeling, and attitude in a clearer form. Similarly, when viewing the works of Richard MacDonald, we witness a unique set of experiences and sensibilities that allow us to see layers of beauty and meaning in each individual composition.
