Duality Column, winner of the prestigious 2022 National Sculpture Society’s Maurice B. Hexter Award Duality Atelier, derived from a masterwork--which is the sole creation of Richard MacDonald-- represents a principle that is fundamental to art from all time periods and cultures—it is the timeless paradox that opposites exist in harmony and interdependence with one another.
Light and dark, day and night, male and female: each principle is defined by its opposite, and when the two are seen in balance a state of harmony is achieved: we perceive a oneness that is transcendent.
Richard MacDonald’s expression of this universal truth in Duality is communicated in a composition of power, subtlety, and grace. A peaceful serenity in the midst of complexity.
Richard MacDonald Atelier features pieces from his collected works that highlight iconic aspects of his lifelong inspiration. Each one is derived from a masterwork, which is the sole creation of Richard MacDonald.
A select group of apprentices and artisans, led by Richard MacDonald, create each atelier piece by hand, following the intensive and time-honored process that takes a clay sculpture through the multiple steps of the lost wax method to be cast in bronze. Each piece is sculpted, cast, and finished with a unique patina in Richard MacDonald’s Monterey studio/foundry.
These are uniquely limited edition works, numbered, and signed by Richard MacDonald. Each sculpture is registered with a certificate of authenticity.
