Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” was a breakthrough for its time; it took ballet from the realm of the sweet and pretty, and for the first time addressed great passion, breathtaking tenderness, joy akin to madness, and tragedy. It is arguably the crowning role for a ballerina, both technically difficult and emotionally demanding. The sculpture highlights the supple grace of the ballerina, and captures a moment of thoughtfulness, integral to the drama of the ballet.
